Do you know what Osteoporosis is?
It is a disease that
directly affects your bones. It can cause your them to become so brittle that any action can cause them to fracture.
In fact the word ‘osteoporosis’ means ‘porous bone’!
While World Osteoporosis Day began in the United Kingdom, it is a worldwide disease and affects approximately 200 million people and while it affects both men and women, women
are four times more likely to develop this disease.
Some of the symptoms are, loss of height, change in posture, shortness of breath, bone fractures and pain in the lower back.
There are MANY factors that can affect your risk of developing the disease and the following medical conditions can lead to higher risks and you might want to discuss with your
health care professional if you should begin an early screening process:
Overactive thyroid, parathyroid, or adrenal glands.
History of bariatric (weight loss) surgery or organ transplant.
Hormone treatment for breast or prostate cancer or a history of missed periods.
Celiac disease, or inflammatory bowel disease.
Blood diseases such as multiple myeloma.
Other lifestyle factors that lead to a higher risk are your eating habits, smoking, drinking alcohol (two or more drinks a day), a lifestyle that is largely inactive.
Some ways to prevent the onset of Osteoporosis are by leading an active lifestyle. Eating healthy and ensuring you get enough
calcium and vitamin D. Getting a yearly bone density scan will also help you monitor your bones health!
